Our GOTS Certification
Our GOTS Certification
Every Butterblu product uses GOTS-certified organic cotton. Here’s what that means, how to verify it, and why it matters for your baby.
Our Certificate
- Certification body: Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO)
- Certificate number: GOTS-23279
- Verify at: global-standard.org — search “Butterblu” or certificate number GOTS-23279
What GOTS Certifies
GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — is the most comprehensive certification in the organic textile industry. It covers the entire supply chain from the cotton field to the finished garment in your hands.
- The farm: Cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs
- The processing: Spinning, dyeing, and finishing must prohibit formaldehyde, azo dyes, heavy metals, chlorine bleach, phthalates, and flame retardants
- The factory: Fair wages, safe working conditions, no child labor
- The finished product: Third-party tested against 100+ prohibited substances
What GOTS Prohibits
GOTS prohibits over 100 harmful substances that are commonly found in conventional baby clothing, including: formaldehyde (wrinkle-resistant treatments), azo dyes (can release carcinogenic amines), heavy metals (cadmium, lead, mercury, chromium), chlorine bleach, flame retardants, phthalates, and PVC.
GOTS vs. “Organic Cotton” Claims
A brand can legally label clothing “made with organic cotton” with as little as 70% organic fiber content — and the dyeing and finishing may still use chemicals that would never pass GOTS inspection. GOTS requires at least 95% certified organic fiber for the “organic” label, full supply chain transparency, and independent third-party auditing at every stage. Companies cannot self-certify for GOTS.
Our Factory Certifications
Our manufacturing partners hold the following independent certifications in addition to GOTS:
- Fair Trade Certified
- EU Ecolabel
- Global Recycled Standard (GRS)
- Organic Content Standard (OCS)
- STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX
- SA8000 (Social accountability)
- Higg Index
- Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI)
One of our primary manufacturing partners is powered entirely by its own wind turbines and is actively working toward carbon-negative operations.
A Note on Product Scope
All Butterblu products use GOTS-certified organic cotton. Some products (such as leggings and certain accessories) include a small percentage of elastane for stretch and fit — standard practice across GOTS-certified brands. The organic cotton in all products remains GOTS certified.
